Its name is translated as "water with moss" or "water moisture", although there are authors that suggest it means "water stirred by the wind", due to its proximity to a few small lakes that have a pretty cloudy color.
Coba was estimated to have had some 50,000 inhabitants (and possibly significantly more) at its peak of civilization, and the built up area extends over some 80 km². The site was occupied by a sizable agricultural population by the 1st century.
The most important clusters are: The Coba cluster, including the Church Pyramid and the recently restored Nohoch Mul cluster, which means "big mound." There are thought to be over 6,000 structures buried in the dense jungle in and around Coba, making this archeological site the classic example of Maya supremacy during the first millennium in Mesoamerica.
